What Sustains Resolutions - New Year Part 1

What Sustains Resolutions
Stepping into a New Year: Part 1

2020.
New pages,
Filled with hope and uncertainty.
New plans, awakened desires.
Sometimes they last.
Sometimes they fade.
And it's not because we aren't disciplined enough,
Not strong enough.
It's because the soil isn't quite ready,
The roots don't have enough water,
The anchor is absent.

Willpower alone can't sustain resolutions through a whole year of mountains, valleys, and curveballs.
We need well-watered soil.
We need a root system,
Free of beliefs that stunt us,
Free of confusion that distracts us.

We need to know where the light is,
Before we can walk towards it.
We need sustainable lifestyle patterns,
Not quick fixes.

We need anchors,
Not ropes that fray with pressure.
We need steadfast rhythms that create a lifetime of wholeness,
Not checklists that dictate days.

So maybe this year,
Before we get caught in the tide of better- more- different- new,
We pause to question, remember,
And clarify what we value most,
And then take the small, sustainable steps towards that light.
The steps that will leave us with stamina through December 31, 2020,
Not bantered and burned out by Spring.

May we think upon what makes us feel free and alive,
Not trapped or pressured or exhausted.
Start there.
Moving closer,
With little steps,
Ripples over time,
That will fill the ocean of your lifetime.

All of nature blooms by starting small,
Abiding with water and oxygen before it dare sprout from the ground.

You're not in a rush,
There's time to find your rhythms.

And let it be easy, not burdensome, beloved.
Oh how far you've come,
Oh how beautiful the journey.

If this resonates with you but you aren't sure where to start, head over to Part 2 for a little insight and reminder.
